Was John perfect?

December 14, 2011 By dschenk Leave a Comment

John, one of the 12 apostles that Jesus picked as his main group.  He wrote 5 books that are in the Bible.  John, I John, II John, III John and Revelation.  He lived the longest of the apostles and Jesus set him up as the one to take card of Jesus’ mother.  In the little letter, I , II, and III John he is very kind but insists that if you say you love God and don’t love your brother, that you don’t really love God.

Let’s look at what we know about him in the Scriptures:

Matthew and Mark always listed him after his brother James.

Mark said that James and John asked to be at the right and left hand of Jesus when he came into his Kingdom.  Matthew said that their mommy asked Jesus for this.

John never used his brother’s name in the book of John.

He did refer to himself as ‘the one that Jesus love’ several times.

He is the one that let us know that he outran Peter when they went to the tomb.  And that Peter is the one who cut off a guys ear — the others mention the ear, but don’t tell you who did it.  When Peter was following along at the first trial, John writes that he was able to go in fine, and that he went back to get them to let Peter in.

John wasn’t perfect.  Jesus nicknamed him as his brother James as ‘sons of thunder’.  But he grew and was useful to Jesus.

You aren’t perfect either.  Neither are your teammates.  If you didn’t know this, sorry to break the news to you.  Get over it.  Deal with it.  You can all grow and work with each other now.  You don’t have to wait until you are perfect.

Song of Solomon Study

This is the story of a young girl as she encounters sex, love, romance, marriage and relationship with a guy. She starts out thinking that maybe she is good looking and might be acceptable to a guy. She becomes strong and confident in who she is and in her ability to bring contentment to her husband. A major part of the book is written in her voice: What she says, what she thinks, what she hears him saying. This little book in the Bible can provide some powerful insights.
