Matthew 5:15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Here Jesus speaks of a light that is hidden and a light that is exposed. Depending on our walks, our surroundings, our moods, our friends our basic knowledge of the bible we tend to hide that light under a bowl. Because we are doubtful in our faith, we hide it. Because we still have sinful desires, we hide it. Because of fear that we’ll run into that non-believer that will go off on you, we hide it. God wants us instead to put our light on a stand. Why?
Of course we automatically think to be a witness to others… but I also think it’s Accountability! If no one knows your a believer than you don’t have to be one. You can pretty much make up your own God with your own rules. This verse goes on to say when we put our light on a stand, here’s the meat guys…IT GIVES LIGHT TO EVERYONE IN THE HOUSE. what light? Light of the fact you’re a believer and rather those people in your house or your life are believers or not, they’ve now been informed that you are.
I’ve learned that even non believers can tell you alot about what you’re not doing as a Christian and sometimes that discourages us to proclaim it. But, the fact is, that light is Christ in us and we are a work in progress, but that work will only progress as we expose that light and not hide it. The verse that follows is one many of us know and goes “Let your light so shine that when they see your good works they glorify your father who is in Heaven.
See…don’t hide that light because it’s not us…you’re really hiding Jesus…the one who suffered and died for our sin and the sins of the world. Certainly we don’t want to do that. God can use anything around you to build you up especially when you expose that light.
